Windsurfing: Eastbourne - Spray Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 4-12 knots ! Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: sunny Max Speed: 20 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered:
Eastbourne, from Spray - Hot & sunny .... very light winds (got a 12 knot
reading on the beach along with a selection of 4-8 knots readings) but it
was white-capping so given the burning desire to try the Gaastra GTX 8.5m
on the Manta 75 and the tease of whitecaps ... obviously I rigged up and
bobbed out to find the wind.
Couple short non-planing runs and then decided to get a little more
ambitious venturing out to where the yachts and dinghies were properly
keeled over ... found a wind line approx 1/2 - 3/4 mile out and couple of
pumps and away .... wind was with current so always conscious to make
ground upwind, but still got a max speed on the gps of 20 knots, in what
would have been 10-12 knots at most of wind.
Returning to the beach was great until approx 1/2 mile out and then it was
a slog off the plane ... but it was nice to try the GTX for myself after
rave reviews for the 7.0m in Wind Surf Mag and then an indifferent review
for the 9.0m in Boards Mag .... the 8.5m was easy to rig & it oozed
quality. It generates good lift when pumped to help get the board up and
planing in pretty light winds. I would suggest the GTX pumps more
efficiently than the 8.5m V8, but I'm yet to test in proper winds, and the
V8 was very good in stronger, verging on overpowered, conditions ... so
it'll be interesting to compare this aspect also. In non-planing mode there
was nothing in it between the GTX and the V8, both were pretty easy
going.
Anyone else get out on the water today ... Camber posse surely got a proper
sea breeze ? How about Worthing ... it's famous for it ?
